Spotlight on Creativity May 2009

Spotlight Image May's Spotlight on Creativity is local creative professional Leo Daiuto, Chief Executive Officer of Slamm Creative. The driving force behind his success is his special attention to the "human need for high-impact sensory experiences." Throughout his 20 years with the Unisys Corporation, his focus has been on creating ideas that incorporate predicting customer needs into design strategies. In 2004 he was brought in to lead the worldwide User Experience Design Group. Within this role, he served as the creative life-blood, responsible for defining and designing the complete customer experience through the usability and serviceability of every product developed by his group.

Leo was also responsible for momentum building designs and strategies around the products developed under his helm as Director of the User Experience group-a responsibility that tapped into his proven success as a marketing and design innovator.

Whether marketing a new product or enhancing an existing one, Leo's unique approach to marketing and product design makes him a stand-out among his peers. Based on a deep understanding of the product, Leo specializes in presenting extremely technical issues in a user-focused way.

His ability to predict user needs and to establish, early-on, the definition of success has made him the go-to man for several Fortune 500 companies, for which he has overseen multi-million dollar projects. With a vision to blend design and technology to create a lasting impression that distances his clients from their competitors, Leo builds experiences that shatter expectations.

Best advice you've ever been given:
The best advice I was ever given was to never be the smartest guy in the room…successful people generally accept that they don't know everything.

Your favorite thing about living in the Philadelphia Region:
I love the soul of the area. It has a great vibe about it. It's a hard working "real" town and I think that adds many intangibles to its DNA.

Your favorite thing about working in the Philadelphia Region:
This region is so rich in technology and innovation. There is a remarkable roster of leaders and resources in and around Philadelphia, and being part of that community is immeasurable.

How would you market the Philadelphia Region to professionals outside the region?
Philadelphia is truly an area rich in opportunities. Both the city and the neighborhoods that surround it are home to innovative companies that continuously push the envelope. Plus, the obvious proximity to New York and DC lends itself to great professional and personal growth.

What advice would you give to young professionals trying to break into your industry?
Be genuine and approach what you do with passion. Those are the intangibles that make people really valuable. At the upper tiers the skill-set portion is a given. The ability to add something to a team above your core competencies is what will set you apart. It's the energy, passion and genuineness that make people "special".
