The Insider: Philadelphia
Proves Phashion Phorward
Philadelphia may be thousands of miles from Paris runways but when it comes to fashion, we may be a lot closer than we think. The fashion industry in the Philadelphia region is active and flourishing, with strong academic programs, fashion celebrations, and new, innovative designers making a splash.
For those interested in fashion as a career, Philadelphia has many great options. Moore College of Art & Design, for instance, the first and only women's art college in the nation, has strong ties to the fashion industry that date back to 1848. Moore's founder Sarah Peter was the wife of Philadelphia's British Consul and an advocate of women's education and advancement.
Today, Moore fashion graduates can be found in top fashion houses such as Diane von Furstenberg and Walter Baker.

Spotlight:
Designing International Fashion
Innovation Philadelphia spotlights regional creative industry entrepreneurs
and young professionals making an impact on the Philadelphia Region, or
innovative initiatives that showcase the tremendous innovative and creative
talent driving Philadelphia's economy.
October's spotlight on creativity is local fashion designer Paula Hian. Paula
grew up on the Philadelphia Main Line and began designing clothes
- drawing,
cutting and using a sewing machine - by age five. It was obvious from an early
age what her career choice would be.
Paula graduated with a degree in art history from Northwestern University, and
then attended New York's Fashion Institute of Technology, where she won the
coveted Concours International des Jeunes Createurs de Mode
award. The award-winning dress was placed in the permanent collection of the
Louvre.

Philadelphia is a best-practice creative city
The City of Philadelphia's activities to grow creative
industries are being recognized nationally and internationally. Innovation
Philadelphia, leading the economic development of the for-profit, creative
industries within the Philadelphia Region, has been invited to numerous
conferences to compare efforts in building a creative economy and in attracting
the creative community of entrepreneurs/employees that are required for a
region to thrive.
In recent months, Kelly Lee, Executive Vice President of
Innovation Philadelphia, has been invited to speak about Philadelphia's
for-profit, creative economy at the Americans for the Arts Convention, the 2008 Re:inventing the City Conference in Sheffield, the 2008 Buffalo Issues Summit
and the Creative Summit Conference 2.0 in Detroit. Ms. Lee was also invited to
participate in a webinar for members of the Americans for the Arts.
"Showcasing what is
happening in Philadelphia at these
conferences is a great way to attract
more businesses in need of creative
services to Philadelphia. It also helps
to discuss the efforts of Philadelphia
and the tools that we have to attract
creative industry entrepreneurs," Lee
said.
