Innovation Matters: June 03, 2009 | Volume 2 | Issue 15

The Insider: HigherEdCamp Philly

On Saturday, June 6 at Huntsman Hall on the University of Pennsylvania campus, HigherEdCamp will commence. HigherEdCamp is an un-conference format open to event participants with no scheduled presentations or panels; nothing but a blank white board to start the idea generation for session topics. HigherEdCamp is focused on bringing individuals involved in academia and technology together to share best practices and strategy for open collaboration, helping to usher in efficient implementation of higher education technology in learning, teaching, and research. HigherEdCamp is completely free, but registration is required. Attendees represent schools all over the Greater Philadelphia region as well as those from New York, Maryland, and Michigan.

Dave Konopka and Karen Leary, a web developer and IT Project leader from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, are the co-organizers for HigherEdCamp.

The motivation behind HigherEdCamp is to connect the often disparate campus environments, sharing past projects, troubleshooting techniques, and future ideas to speed up the process of technology incorporation in higher education.

“Antiques Roadshow” for Inventions June 9 at Hyatt Regency Philadelphia features Doug Hall from ABC TV's American Inventor

The national tour of the PlanetEureka.com Innovation Roadshow stops in Philadelphia on June 9, providing a one-day workshop for local inventors to find out the fair market price for their ideas. Innovation guru Doug Hall teaches entrepreneurs how to translate their idea or technology into a customer focused product or service description that can be easily understood by a businessperson who doesn’t have technical or scientific training. The inventor can then list their idea, compliments of the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Manufacturing Extension Partnership (NSIT/MEP), in the USA National Innovation Marketplace and receive a fact-based innovation research report and sales forecast. The report answers the age old question, “What's my idea worth?”

The USA National Innovation Marketplace, a program from the Department of Commerce NIST/MEP, gives American inventors a fair shot—enhancing their credibility by providing a fact-based innovation research report and sales forecast that investors can understand. For buyers or investors, the Marketplace provides a virtual R&D resource that can triple innovation success rates and speed to market. The Marketplace uses an open innovation strategy, which involves partnering, licensing, and co-developing innovations with partners outside of a company instead of traditional, internal research and development. It connects innovation sellers, buyers, investors and distributors in all industries through a three-pronged approach: 1) Translation Training; 2) Valuation Forecasting; 3) Access to Buyers, Investors & Distributors. More information at PlanetEureka.com.

Doug Hall, the “Truth Teller” Judge on the first season of ABC TV's American Inventor, is the founder and CEO of Eureka! Ranch and Merwyn Research Inc., a market research company that provides innovation sales forecasts and publishes the PlanetEureka.com network of international innovation marketplaces. The Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) is a program of the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). MEP is a national network of affiliated manufacturing extension centers and field offices located throughout all fifty States and Puerto Rico.

Inventors register for the workshop at PlanetEureka.com; registration costs covered by NIST/MEP

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Commerce NIST/MEP and Society of Manufacturing Engineers. Supported locally by American Society of Inventors, Entrepreneurs' Forum of Greater Philadelphia and Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC
