The Insider: The Sound of Philadelphia

While the goals and aspirations of our founding fathers were lofty and far-sighted, it seems unlikely that even Ben Franklin could have foreseen the impact of the music industry in his city. From classical to hip-hop, Philadelphia is the home of composers, performers, and production professionals in every genre. And not only that, music fans in Philly enjoy a reputation as being one of the "most dependable audiences on the planet" according to music author Richie Unterberger.

According to Econsult, the music industry cluster is a significant player in the Philadelphia economy with an annual impact of nearly $1.9 billion for the City and over $4.9 billion for the region ("Potential Economic Impacts of Universal Companies' Proposed Entertainment and Economic Development Strategy"). In 2005, the music, film and video production industries employed 7,000 people in the region and earned $.3 billion (Creative Economy Economic Impact Study: 2007 conducted by Econsult). Music is clearly big business - and getting bigger.

Innovation Philadelphia spotlights regional creative industry entrepreneurs and young professionals making an impact on the Philadelphia Region, or innovative initiatives that showcase the tremendous innovative and creative talent driving Philadelphia's economy.

September's spotlight on creativity is local creative professional, Dawn Frisby Byers. As Executive Director of the Philadelphia Chapter of The Recording Academy, Dawn develops and executes outreach programs, advocacy initiatives, professional education and special events for the Philadelphia Chapter. She took the position in July 2008 and relocated back to her home town, Philadelphia.

Design Awards

In an effort to engage and strengthen the regional design community, AIGA Philadelphia has launched the Philadelphia Design Awards (PDA) from July 30 to October 15. PDA will accept submissions by Philadelphia's hardest-working print and interactive designers. Building on Samuel Johnson's belief that "Great works are performed, not by strength, but by perseverance," PDA will accept submissions by Philadelphia's hardest-working print and interactive designers.
