The Insider: New Arts and Culture Officer Excited to "Move the City Forward"
"I've been an admirer of the cultural sector [in Philadelphia] for many years, the last 15 years or so," Gary Steuer says. Come October, Steuer will take office as the Chief Cultural Officer for the City of Philadelphia.
Steuer currently serves as Vice President for Private Sector Affairs at Americans for the Arts, as well as Executive Director of the Arts & Business Council of Americans for the Arts. In this capacity, he has worked with the Arts and Business Council of Greater Philadelphia as well as the Philadelphia Cultural Alliance, so he is no stranger to the arts community in Philadelphia.
Steuer says that there is tremendous energy, excitement and creativity in Philadelphia, which is what excites him about his new position come October. This is an opportunity to help continue to move the city forward, he says. Part of the appeal of the position was adding a larger scope to the office - by broadening the focus beyond non-profit arts and culture.

Leading Expression Through Art
Innovation Philadelphia spotlights regional creative
industry entrepreneurs and young professionals making an impact on
the Philadelphia Region, or innovative initiatives that showcase the
tremendous innovative and creative talent driving Philadelphia's
economy.
August's spotlight on creativity is creative professional Josette Bonafino. Josette is Executive Director of Multicultural Youth eXchange (MYX), a Philadelphia-based, nonprofit organization that works to increase tolerance among young people worldwide by using art-based projects to explore diverse cultures and social issues relevant to all youth.
In July 2008, MYX led a five-week workshop for 50 Philadelphia students, entitled "Silence Youth Violence." The purpose of the workshop was to examine the root causes of youth violence and explore poetry as an instrument of social change. The end result of their collaboration is the CD, Young Voices Against Violence. It was created with lyrics and beats written entirely by the students in the program.
